FAQ'S

WHERE DO I START AND HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND DOING PILATES?

With any form of exercise, consistency is key. The optimal recommendation is 2-3 times a week. However, once a week on a very regular basis can also be beneficial combined with other exercise. It is also easy to practise the matwork at home!

We recommend you start with our Starter Package so you can learn (in a one-to-one setting) the foundations, key concepts, exercises and setup. Then you can consider taking a combination of privates, apparatus and mat classes.

MAT VS APPARATUS CLASSES

The matwork can be the most challenging series in the Pilates Method as you do not have any assistance - it is just you and the mat. When practiced in a Classical way, it is a dynamic, flowing workout, often with transitions that are like exercises themselves. You should feel as though every muscle in your body has been worked.

In an Apparatus class, you will use the Mat, springs & bars of the Cadillac in a specialized Tower unit.Wunda Chairs and barrels. Working with springs can help you find connections and build awareness in your bodies so that the matwork can be done more efficiently. It provides a fantastic and challenging mind and body workout.

We may also use Chairs, barrels, pedi poles or other small props in the class.

WHO WAS JOSEPH PILATES AND WHAT IS THE AUTHENTIC / CLASSICAL PILATES METHOD?

Joseph Pilates never trademarked his method (originally known as Contrology), so there is quite a variety of classes taught as Pilates - some quite close to the original method and some so far removed that it is unrecognizable as Pilates.

Classical/Authentic programs focus on preserving the exercises as Joseph taught them. Although there are slight variations between Classical schools as to the real version and order, the overall method is largely the same. Contemporary programs vary more widely and may incorporate new exercises and variations, or pull from other modalities such as physical therapy and yoga.
